Handicapped Encounter Christ
(as perceived by its founder, John L. Keck)
HEC is a specific kind of Christian Retreat. It is an Encounter Retreat.
HEC is Gospel centered and therefore for adults. It is spiritual in nature. It is about our inner lives and our relationship with God. It is not about disabled rights nor psychotherapy, though these are serious matters. HEC is a moment in time to deepen our spirituality and our communion with God and one another.
HEC includes all people on an equal basis. It is not exclusively for physically or cognitively different people. But HEC does emphasize that those among us who have physical or cognitive differences are welcome at this retreat, because on many traditional retreats, people with such differences are not accommodated.
HEC is about broken people (which means, all of us) coming together to try to live a Gospel centered life. Anyone who is willing to participate is welcome.
